Campbell River day trip + Kitty Coleman beach fire with Elli and Andy

On the road early to make the most of our day trip north to Campbell River.

We have decided to bike the water front portion of the local Greenway Trail so we park at Tyee Spit and head out. Campbell River sits along Discovery Passage with Quadra Island and mainland Vancouver just across the strait.

Always looking at boats along the way

Main boat harbor

We had heard the Maritime Museum here is very good, but unfortunately it is closed today.

Unique landmark

We stop and enjoy a tea at this cute little coffee shop right on the water. So nautical.

Directional arrows point the way to far away places

Alberta Rose

It's a very nice bike ride along the waterfront with all sorts of things to admire and look at.

We do about 15 kms of the loop and end up back at the truck ready to launch the kayaks into the Campbell River estuary.

Campbell River estuary

Low tide has the estuary significantly reduced so we head onto the Campbell River and paddle upstream as far as we can make it. There is quite a strong current flowing against us so it is a lot of work. We pull into another side estuary and enjoy a calmer paddle.

The third leg of todays triathlon doesn't involve a beer, but yet another activity. We head to Elk Falls late in the day and do the hike to see the falls we have heard so much about. Pictures of falls never do any justice as this fall is huge!

Elk Falls

There is a huge suspension bridge over the falls. It is all really quite impressive. So much water.

It is getting late so we head back to our trailer still sitting at Kitty Coleman campground.

Our adventure rig

We have been chatting on and off all weekend with a lovely young German couple that currently live in Victoria. After supper we end up sitting around their beach fire and swapping stories back and forth about our lives.

Elli at their beach fire. Kitty Coleman was a great campsite- so close to the ocean :)

Elli and Andy were really sweet and we hope they come and visit us one day in Alberta :)
