South East to Fort Carlton Provincial Historic Park, Sask.

After a great breakfast with Clint and Joyce we say our good-byes and hit the road until next time.

Driving through the countryside there is small town after small town and we come upon many different Prairie Sentinels  (aka grain elevators ) They are very cool and stand tall to Saskatchewan's vast agriculture industry.

The landscape is definitely changed from numerous lakes and trees to vast fields with no fences.

Fort Carlton was a Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post from 1795 to 1885. It is located along the North Saskatchewan River not far from Duck lake.

We arrive at 4:30 and it closes at 5 so we get a super quick tour of the old fort. It's great as we are one on one with the tour guide so we see a lot.

Black Bear hide

We get taken into a room filled with animal skins that were part of the old fur trade. So many animals were killed and furs sent back to England for vanity clothing....mink coats, fox stoles etc etc.

Numerous types of animal pelts

Another room was the Hudson Bay trading post. All sorts of provisions and animal traps.

We have a reservation at the on site campground an after pulling into the campsite, we go for a quick hike to see the views of the river valley and the fort. Quite a lot of bear scat and tons of Saskatoon berries. Lots of bear food.

Tee pees surround the fort

Back at the RV we start making a pizza and this little guy must smell it as he's all over the trailer. At one point he keeps jumping up on the bikes on the back of the trailer and throwing himself into the window. He'd slide down and then jump up again. We think he must see himself in the mirror :)

We are on the trail of Gabriel Dumont and Louis Riel and tomorrow we are passing through all sorts of historical sites regarding The First Nations and Treaty 6. Gabriel Dumont lived in this area.  Fun Fact: Gabriel Dumont is a direct relation of Sheila :)
