North Bay to Hearst, Ontario (570 km day) Officially Half Way Home

Highway 11 - Northern Route

We were planning on an 8 am depart, but when Chris does the regular morning checks, he notices a low tire on the trailer. Sure enough we picked up a nail somewhere and it needs a repair. Being Sunday in North Bay, Ontario, our options are limited. Canadian Tire opens at 9 am and they have us on the road by 9:45.

Bull Moose in the ditch

Around 10:15 barely on the road, we have a truck flashing lights at us. We suspect a moose and sure enough there it is...he is massive...scary.

Since we went east via the north shore of Lake Superior, we are trying to take as many new roads as possible on the way home so we opt for the 'Northern Route of the Trans Canada Highway No. 11'.

We come across a sign about the 'Arctic Watershed' and read later that we were at a line where water north of the line flows towards James Bay, Hudson Bay and ultimately the Arctic Ocean. Water flowing south drains towards the Great Lakes and out to the Atlantic Ocean.

Harvesting crops

The trees open up into huge agricultural lands that we were not expecting. Even though it feels like we are so far north and this area is known as the 'Gateway to the North', we are still south of where we live in Alberta.

Rheault Distillery

We stop for lunch and there is a small market going on. 'Rheault Distillery' catches our attention. They are the only distillery in Canada that is literally distilling out of an addition to their house. They have won numerous prestigious awards and are proud to tell us they forage for their local ingredients right within their community. After a couple of small samples, we buy some gin and a blueberry liqueur.

Our sister town

Highway 11 arches north and west from North Bay through communities like Cochrane, Ontario. Finally we meet the other Cochrane :)

Rolled trailer - ugh

Sadly we come upon this trailer flipped on its side. We are unsure what has happened but yikes...we feel for the people dealing with this mess.

Half way home

Finally we make it to Hearst, Ontario...officially our half way home destination.

Chef Christo :)

We make a pizza and have a beer which passes the evening. We'll be on the road early tomorrow.
