Rails-to-trails Morell to St. Peter's Bay

In the afternoon we drive to the Town of Morell to bike the rails-to-trails bike trail from Morell to St. Peter's Bay.

Tip to Tip trail on PEI

The entire Confederation Bike Trail is 273 km (170 miles) from tip to tip of PEI. We asked google which is the most scenic section and it came up with our ride today. 

We learned that back in 1871 PEI began construction on a cross island railway. The cost of the railway began to cause PEI crippling debt so in 1873 PEI agreed to join Confederation in exchange for railway debt relief plus money to finish the project. The main railway line finally opened in 1875.

Morell Bridge

In 1989 Canadian National Railways permanently ceased all freight operations and work crews pulled up and dismantled all the physical iron tracks. In 1994 the PEI Provincial Government bought the abandoned right-of-way from CN, and by 2000 the tip to tip conversion to a bike trail was complete and Confederation Trail was launched. The name was chosen due to the fact that PEI originally joined Confederation over the railway.

Mussel farms in the bay

Driving back to Cavendish Beach are many bays filled with mussel farms. This area is a primary hub for PEI's mussel industry.

After supper we do another bike ride through the National Park to catch the sunset. It is all just so darn beautiful.

The sunset turns out to be a burning ball disappearing into the water rather unspectacular but it's a great final night at Cavendish Beach National Park.
