Day 2 - Cabot Trail - Kayak the Aspy River - Meat Cove day trip + Dinner at the Markland Resort - Cape Breton Nova Scotia

View from our truck bed :)

We are up early and it looks like a very nice day ahead of us :)

Yesterday we walked the trail from our campsite down to the Aspy River to make sure it was safe to bring the truck with all our kayak gear down here.

Gypsum cliffs
The river is very calm and peaceful as we paddle along. We come upon these striking white-coloured gypsum cliffs.

A few kilometres downstream we come to the outlet into the Atlantic Ocean. The water is fast moving here so we paddle hard back upstream as we don't want to get caught in the riptides created where the two waters meet.

Next we take the scenic drive out to the northernmost settlement in Nova Scotia, known as 'Meat Cove'. It is the extreme tip of Cape Breton Island and named for the early settlers who dried moose meat outdoors.

Remote living :)

Meat Cove getting closer

The road is rugged and not for the faint of heart in places. It is so remote out here we wonder who the heck would live out here.

Meat Cove beach

Once at Meat Cove, we take in the views from the campsite high above the beach. Then we head down to the beach and sit on the rocks feeling very small against the massive power of nature.

Just off the beach are a pod of pilot whales which frequently feed and travel right along the rugged coastal waters of the Cape Breton tip. They are too far out to see in our pictures but we sit and watch for a long time.

We do a short 2 kilometre hike that goes pretty much straight up for more panoramic views of this rugged coastline where time seems to stop as salt air fills our lungs.

After an amazing day, we head back to camp for a quick rest and shower before heading to 'The Markland Restaurant' for dinner. It's a local ocean front dining spot serving local seafood. Nice way to end another great day.
