Norse Point - Rocky Harbour - Lobster Cove Lighthouse, Gros Morne, Newfoundland

View of Bonne Bay and The Tablelands
On our way into the village of Norse Point, we stop at a look out point for a view of Bonne Bay and The Tablelands. There is a unique wind vane here called 'The Gros Morne Whirl', which is a wildlife themed wind-powered whirl. There are moose, chickadees, fish, beaver and the list goes on.

Burnt Hill trail
We are doing the 'Burnt Hill Trail', which was recommended to us by a very kind Parks Canada employee, Walter,  whom we have gotten to know a bit. Walter lived a lot of his life in Alberta so he has a soft spot for us and our province. It's an easy few kilometre loop around the top of a hill that offers great views of Norse Point, Bonne Bay and The Tablelands.

Views of East Arm
At an easy to identify spot along the trail, we hide a little Geo Cache token for Joel and Victoria to find when they come here after their wedding September 12th in St. John's. We'll give them a little map to find our secret token.

100 km-per-hour winds at time

The wind can be dangerous out here at times when the cold easterlies rush the length of East Arm and smash into Norris Point. Water devils and mini tornadoes dance across the water as winds reach 100 kms-per-hour. It is very evident that it is a tough life for trees and plants.  It's windy today but not like that!

Robert - oldest resident in Norris Point
At the bottom of the trail is a bench we sit at and an elderly fellow, Robert, comes by and sits with us. Everyone is so friendly out here. Turns out he has lived here since he was 9 when his family moved here from Labrador. He says this is the kind of place where people help each other and you are very safe. Says he bought his truck 14 years ago and hasn't taken the key out yet :)  Robert tells us a few stories and then he hurries off to his 93rd birthday party.

Marine Station and aquarium are closed for today

Rocky Harbour Bay

Next we head into Rocky Harbour and walk the beach. It's a busier town than Norris Point as the tour buses have just pulled in for the day and their passengers are everywhere. It is still very beautiful with views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse
A final stop for the day at the 'Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse'. We do a couple short walks and get an overall understanding of the hardship the lighthouse keepers and their families would have had to overcome to live here. They successfully grew gardens and raised a few small animals like chickens and pigs.

Many light keepers and their families lived here over the years.

Back home after another busy day in Gros Morne.
