I guess this means we are officially on the Cabot Trail ;)
| Cheticamp-primary entry point of Cabot Trail |
On our way to Cape Breton Highlands National Park we first stop in Cheticamp to scout out the 'Cabot Trail Arena' parking area. Now that we have fully decided to not pull our trailer around the cape, we talked to a guy named Harvey and it has been ok'd for us to leave our trailer at the arena while we drive the Cabot Trail.
| 18 hole Championship Golf course |
The La Portage Golf Course shares the same parking lot as the arena so we have a quick look. It's an 18 hole Championship course with crazy views and challenges. Out of our league...lol
| Great views off the first tee :) |
| National parks are great places to stay |
Cape Breton Highlands National Park is gorgeous. We have a fantastic site right in the nice shade of trees, which is great as it's 29 degrees today.
| Site 51 - very nice |
| Nice out-and-back trail |
Before supper we decide to bike the 'Salmon Pools' trail as it's too late in the day for a 10km hike. We will be following the floor of the Cheticamp River canyon.

| Cheticamp River |
| Rugged beauty of Cape Breton |
It's a great mountain bike trail with a couple of steep hills and some rough/rocky patches. Once we reach the first pool, the canyon and river views open up. Once past Chance Pool, the trail narrows through dense forest along rapid sections of the river and then we reach the final turnaround at a big 'end of trail' sign, even though it continues for who knows how far.
| Chance Pool |
It's already about 6 pm so we turn around knowing Chance Pool is where we are stopping for a swim.
The Chance Pool has polished exposed bedrock making it the perfect spot to slip into the water for a swim. There is a little shoot of fast moving water that we can reach by hanging onto the rocks on the side and then a jump into the stream takes you down the river rather swiftly until it widens and calms.
| Getting dressed for the ride back to the trailer |
This little last minute expedition for the day turns into something beyond wonderful. The raw beauty with the sun warming the pools created by perfectly smooth colourful rocks is something we liken to a trip to Maui a ton of years ago.
| Mussels and white wine |
Earlier today we bought 2 pounds of fresh mussels from Newfoundland. Chris creates a delicious meal of pasta and mussels done in white wine, garlic and parmesan cheese. 'Jost' wines is a local Nova Scotia vineyard. All very nice.
